Karachi, June 17, 2025: A dramatic and shocking incident unfolded in Malir Jail, Karachi, where more than 200 prisoners escaped following a 5.6 magnitude earthquake that shook the city on Tuesday night.

How Did The Prisoners Escape?

According to reports, the earthquake caused significant structural damage to sections of the jail. Authorities claim that during the emergency evacuation protocol, some security doors and outer gates were left unlocked amid panic.

Amid the chaos, prisoners took advantage of the confusion and managed to flee the prison compound. Some scaled boundary walls while others ran through the main gates.

Officials Confirm Mass Escape

The Karachi Police and Sindh Home Department have confirmed the escape, launching a city-wide search operation. Roads leading to Balochistan and interior Sindh have been placed under surveillance, and emergency alerts have been issued.

"All escapees will be captured. We are reviewing the footage and suspending negligent staff," said DIG Jails, Sindh.

Public Reaction and Security Concerns

This event has caused fear among local residents, especially those living near the jail. Questions are being raised about the emergency response systems of correctional facilities during natural disasters.

The government is expected to initiate a full inquiry into how over 200 dangerous criminals could escape in a matter of minutes.
